Vestibular Therapy and Dizziness Treatment

Dizziness, vertigo, and balance disorders can significantly affect daily life. Simple activities such as walking, turning your head, or standing up may feel unstable or disorienting. Vestibular rehabilitation is a specialized form of physical therapy designed to reduce these symptoms and improve stability.

Vestibular therapy focuses on the inner ear and related systems that control balance and spatial awareness. When this system is disrupted, individuals may experience dizziness, motion sensitivity, or difficulty maintaining balance.

What Is Vestibular Rehabilitation?

Vestibular rehabilitation is a non-invasive, exercise-based approach that uses a symptom-specific progression of customized movements. Treatment is individualized following a comprehensive assessment and is structured to improve balance control, reduce functional limitations, and restore confidence in daily movement. The goal of therapy is to control symptoms, reduce functional disability, and improve overall quality of life.

Common Symptoms Addressed

Vestibular rehabilitation may help individuals experiencing dizziness, vertigo, spinning sensations, motion sensitivity, or unsteadiness while walking. It is often appropriate for those diagnosed with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) or other vestibular and balance disorders. Symptoms vary from person to person, so care is tailored to each patient’s presentation and mobility limitations.

Treatment Approaches

Treatment may include canalith repositioning procedures such as the Epley maneuver, habituation and adaptation exercises, gaze stabilization training, balance training, gait training, transfer training, fall prevention strategies, self-management techniques, and patient and family education. Exercises are progressed carefully to promote adaptation while minimizing symptom aggravation.

When to Seek Evaluation

Persistent dizziness, repeated loss of balance, or ongoing instability should be evaluated. A structured physical therapy assessment can help determine whether vestibular rehabilitation is appropriate and guide a treatment plan focused on safe mobility and symptom management.
